MUSIC WITHOUT BORDERS

When I was asked to head up north to Kuala Lumpur for MTV World Stage 2011, I was naturally excited. After all, MTV World Stage is a global phenomenon that has brought multi-genre talents with global relevance to audiences the world over.

The Asian instalment has featured the likes of rousing Brit luminaries Kasabian, American band All-American Rejects, pop sensation Katy Perry, German rockers Tokio Hotel, Korean pop stars Wonder Girls and Malaysia's own Estranged and Bunkface.

And there's something to be said about watching a gig overseas. Some of the gigs in Singapore can be a little staid; whereas if you've been to gigs overseas, there's a vibe that just ... rocks.

I remember heading to Madison Square Garden (MSG), that renowned concert arena in New York City, in January 2009 to catch American rock band Kings Of Leon, whose success was built upon the earlier years of their career almost a decade back. Located in the heart of The Big Apple, the venue is easily accessible - the Penn Station is located just below The Garden - and there are loads of food stores, book stores and 24-hour convenience stores littered around MSG.

Sure, I was a big fan of the band then, but, no, I didn't head down uber early - mostly because I had a ticketed seat (not general admission). It was a sold-out show and the crowd was quite well-mannered, maybe because the majority of them were in the age range of 24 to 36.

At any rate, while I wouldn't have minded being in a mosh pit, it turned out to be a good thing, because the band turned up two hours after the stipulated start time, and I was suffering from severe lack of sleep and jet lag. (And I left halfway while the band was playing their hit song 17 to head back to my hotel room to crash.)

I made amends later that year, in October, when I travelled to London for a week to catch some of my favourite artistes in the world - Morrissey, The Dead Weather and Phoenix. I even scored a free ticket to Matthew Herbert, courtesy of a friend whose friend cancelled on him at the last minute.

It was also a great way to see some of London's most famous concert venues. Morrissey was performing at the revered Royal Albert Hall, while The Dead Weather and Phoenix were both playing at O2 Academy Brixton, previously known as the Brixton Academy, where a host of pop and rock luminaries have performed: Madonna, The Clash, Iron Maiden, Brian May, Arcade Fire, Nine Inch Nails, Bob Dylan, Sex Pistols, Faith No More ... you name it.

So excited was I that I actually turned up two hours early to join the queue.

The atmosphere was fantastic, despite the brittle cold weather London was facing then - one family seated beside me had even travelled from France to catch Phoenix. The mood was hyped up and I was finally catching two of my favourite bands live. It was an overwhelming experience and one I would, on no account, forget. Well, maybe save for the nasty hostel I was staying in. Oh well, you can't always get what you want.

With those memories of New York and London in mind, it's understandable that Shah Alam might not exactly be the first choice in any travel itinerary to catch a gig. I mean, where is that? (Just kidding.) This year's World Stage featured Jared Leto's outfit 30 Seconds To Mars, Korean boyband Beast and newbie American rockers Neon Trees (who performed in Singapore two days later).

But I was also a little worried. Apparently, a number of protests started following Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad's objections to the gig being held at Shah Alam's technology hub, i-City. According to The Malay Mail, "most felt the concert would encourage immoral activities among young revellers", adding that an online petition had been set up by the MP, which elicited such comments as "Please respect the majority Muslim community in Shah Alam. Our teenagers will follow Western culture if the concert still proceed" (sic) and "Please consider not 'polluting' the knowledge centre that is i-City with something that will lead to immoral activities".

Nevertheless, it was decided that the show would go on. I didn't see any crowds waving banners saying "Stop The Concert" as we made our way to the Empire Hotel. Located in Subang Jaya, it's surrounded by highways, terrace houses and two shopping malls. If you are a hardcore party animal, well, this is obviously the wrong place to be. It took 25 minutes to get to i-City, which is located in a ... let's just say it's not the brightest of city centres. The space that MTV World Stage occupied was huge, with food stalls selling Ramly burgers, fried chicken and barbecued meat surrounding the area.

There are a few things you notice while attending an MTV World Stage gig in Shah Alam. One, security is super tight. The place was heavily guarded by policemen and security guards and it was a sight to behold (I'd seen nary a policeman at the London and New York gigs). They're also super serious about their work. As we entered, the rotund guard confiscated my journo friend's chocolate bar and forbade us from bringing our digital cameras, and almost took away my floral green Cath Kidson umbrella, too. Hey, it wasn't as if I was going to throw my prized brolly at Jared Leto.

Two, it's a very punctual show. It started at 6.50pm sharp, with VJs Utt and Holly welcoming the 15,000-strong crowd to i-City, quickly followed by Malaysian band Pop Shuvit getting the floor hyped up with their brand of hip hop and rock.

Three, "super casual" is a real dress code. Unlike some Singaporean concert-goers, who dress to impress when at a gig at Fort Canning Park, the festival-goers, comprising mostly tweens and curious parents, were dressed in plain garb.

But that doesn't mean they don't love their gigs. Punters had been queuing up since noon just to get a hold of a pair of tickets. The wired masses obeyed Pop Shuvit lead singer Moots' every instruction - from waving their arms to singing along - and when the blazer-clad frontman stage-dived into the mosh pit, they were only too happy to hoist him along. They were wooed when Korean pop throbs Beast came on with their with energetic dance moves and singing their hits - all the while throwing bouquets of flowers to adoring female fans during their performance.

Things started to get suitably messy when American alternative rock band Neon Trees made their way onstage to massive screams. Maybe that's why lead singer Tyler Glenn, sporting his mohawk hairstyle, commenced shrieking the words out. The fans loved every bit of his sweaty antics though, crazily lapping it up.

American rock giants 30 Seconds To Mars were the obvious fan favourites, with Leto and gang throwing out a slew of thunderous tunes. Leto even took off his sleek black blazer to bare a black singlet, the throng hot and bothered, squealing and shrieking, as he invited dozens of overly appreciative fans onstage.

MTV World Stage Live In Malaysia may not have offered the same assorted breadth of choice like their global counterparts, but it totally worked. The fans were game for anything and everything any band threw at them - they jumped, fist pumped, cheered, and applauded in unison. You can't help but get caught up in that too.

Kudos to them; we ought to learn a twirl or two along the way.

Trending the hagstag and tweet their names to make them appear on the TT list.
We think it is an easy and quick way to raise our voice and our hands saying we still remember Georg & Gustav because we both know that Tokio Hotel are Bill, Tom, Georg and Gustav, four talented german guys not just sexy twins!
We can do it once more time. Let's show the power!

Thank you.

ELLE GIRL INTERVIEW

Interview with Tokio Hotel - Part 1

For all GIRLS who are fans of TH, sorry to have kept you waiting. I will now post the interview of TH, which is done when thay came to Japan for the VMAJ show last month. Due to the limited 10-minute time, I could not ask all the questions collected from Blog and Twitter, but the 4 lovely boys tried their best to answer the questions.
On June 24th, although I was preparing the ELLEgirl Night, I decided to interview TH anyway. Here I would like to thank the staff for your concern.

Here are Gustav, Bill, Tom, Georg from the left. I thought they got jet lag, but actually they looked very fresh when they entered the interview room.

The interviews you guys took before have made a stir all around the world. The interview was translated into, of course, English, and also French, Thai, Russian and other languages, and put on web. There are also comments written in English, French and German in my blog.
Bill: (very glad) Yeah, that's so amazing, right? It's unbelievable.

This time I told fans I would interview TH, so in recent days I received a large number of questions from Uruguay, Russia, Italy, China and etc. Fans all over the earth want to ask you questions. They wrote something like this: if you would come to Japan, we hope you come to Kyusyu; or we hope you can come to Uruguay or Moscow. They all hope TH can come to their local place.
Bill: I see. We'd love to. All the fans keep eyes on your blog, right?

Yeah, I think that network between TH fans is great.
Well, let's get started. Let's see how many questions you can answer.
Did you search for your favourite place or store in Tokyo? (From KANA)
Bill: To be honest, we don't have opportunities to look around or even free time. Especially this time we just stay for 2 nights. [*actually, they stay for 4 days 3 nights] We spend all our time on interviews or shows (rehearsal and activities included), so we don't have any chance to ramble around. But in the first visit to Japan, we had 30 minutes of free time, so I checked some beautiful and fashionable people.

Where is it? Harajuku or Shibuya?
Bill: Yeah, it's great. I had gone to some fashion stores. So, I would like to come to Japan and go around leisurely when I have a holiday next time.

Interview with Tokio Hotel - Part 2

Here's a question form a girl, who wears Yukata in today's event: Do you like Kimono and Yukata? (From Sindy)
Bill: Really? We like it. (Eyes shining) Last time we received Kimono as presents. Every morning we woke up in Kimono. [*actually, I think that what Bill received is Yukata, insteand of Kimono. Firstly, it is very difficult to wear Kimono, and it is not confortable to wear Kimono and sleep. Secondly, Kimono is kind of expensive. But the original text is written as Kimono, so here I translated as Kimono.]
Tom: Last time I took a picture with two girls in Kimono.
Bill: Yeah, yeah.

But if you wear Kimono in the show, it must be different style with your songs.
Bill: Hahaha. That's right. Maybe we have to prepare some black Kimono with rivets.
Tom: (Laugh) Georg may wear Kimono tomorrow in VMAJ.

Georg looks like to say no with a cool smile.

Please tell us what kind of feeling you guys want to express in the performance of tommorow's VMAJ. As this time, the event is in the form of an aid, which is going to support victims in the Great East Japan Earthquake. (From yukari, TH55 and KANA)
Bill: The meaning of 'aid' is of couse important. We really appreciate the opportunity of taking part in this activity. I think that It is really cool for MTV to take the lead in this aspect. The successive aids are quite important. People unite and donate for the victims is also important. We really want to be one part of them and support them, so it's our honor to perform in VMAJ tomorrow.

Interview with Tokio Hotel - Part 3

In the previous interview, we had talked about your favourite movies and the background of your music, there were lots of fans echoed about it, and I personally also would like to know, that have you ever been saved by music?
When you are depressed, you feel like you are saved by one song, something like this.
All the band members: Absolutely and all the time.
Tom: I think we are saved by composing. Otherwise, Bill has nowhere to go.
All: Laugh.
Bill: Music saves people anytime in no matter what kind of situation or emotion, as many staff and Tom are always writing the best song at that time.

When you write songs, do you have "bringing the hope to everybody" in mind?
Bill: Firstly, I always think about everyone's idea and write them down. I like to tour best, because I can share my emotion and feeling with others. Then I can also know how they react (to me). I received letters from fans written "your songs save me". We don't know what's going on, but we are very happy about it. So, music can really helps people. When fans told us that our songs can help them, we are so proud of ourselves.

Gustav and Georg, have you ever been saved by music?
Georg: For us, especially for Gustav and me, we always think that we don't have other things to do, except music. If I was not in the rehearsal room, I should have been idling in the streets all day along.
Tom: Doing some stupid things.
Gustav: Working in post office.
Tom & Bill: Laugh.
Georg: It may be because we got in touch with music when we were teenagers. That was very important. (Georg often made collusion.)

Interview with Tokio Hotel - Part 4

Fan's question: Would you mind telling us your secret of skin care? (From DESI)
All: Laugh.
Tom: Isn't it the opposite? (Laugh) (Do the girls) really want to know about our skin?
Georg: Mine is... (Touching his face and hair)
Bill: Proactiv? (Looking at Georg)
Tom: Your hair is nice. (Everyone is looking at Georg.)
(Maybe Georg really has the best skin and the most beautiful, and longest hair)
Bill: I do not do any skincare.
Tom: I use the soap provided by hotel all the time.
Bill: To me, it's the sun. I think that bathing in the sunshine a little bit is good to skin. At least, it works on me. People always say that sunburn makes you look older, but I don't really care.
Bill: Even if something is wrong in the skin, sunburn can hide it. (Laugh)

Interview with Tokio Hotel - Part 5

Tom, some fans want to ask why you wear a beard. (From bk89. At that moment, Bill is not wearing a beard, so I just ask Tom.)
Tom: I have no idea. Maybe it's because it looks good, so I start to wear.
Bill: It's much easier, isn't it? Comparing to shaving the beard everyday...
Tom: If I shave my beard everyday, my skin will be rough like Bill's.
Bill: The good thing is that the freckles can be hidden.
Georg: It took half a year to grow the beard like this long. (Laugh)

(Gustav is touching his own face, but nobody notices that. Or does eveyone try to ignore his action? Laugh)

We notice that Bill developed his muscles. Did you do any training?
Bill: As Tom goes to gym for training, we go to gym together sometimes.

Do you guys have twitter account? (From Jasminev)
Tom: We have an official one, but we don't have private twitter account.

TOKIO HOTEL TAKE A STAND ABOUT PETA AND PERFORM ON RUSSIA!

Tokio Hotel take a stand about PETA and perform on Russia!

Maybe it is just the fact that I really liked their PETA ads or maybe that I finally found a decent quality video of their performance at Muz TV Awards on Moscow (that were celebrated more than a month ago!) BUT the point is that I wanted to talk about Tokio Hotel!

The last I´ve heard from them was when they performed on the VMAJ (on Japan obviously) their latest single Darkside Of The Sun but when I found this video of their performance on Russia I thought to myself: "I've to share this!!" and here you have it! They did Darkside Of The Sun, World Behind My Wall and Automatic!

Oh! And at the end of the post I'll put the other image I liked of their PETA ad campaign. Happy to know they support the cause!

THE HOLLYWOOD CRAZE WITH TEENAGE STARS

The child star is by no means a new phenomenon. In Shakespeare’s day, for example, the parts of female leads were often played by young boys. These boys could become so popular that there was at least one case in which one theatrical company had its young star kidnapped by a rival troupe. The latter troupe hoped to force the boy to act in its plays, and thus secure a bigger audience.
However, these days, it seems as if practically all the famous people in entertainment are teenagers, or at least start out that way when they first become famous. In the United States, prime examples include Miley Cyrus, the Jonas Brothers, and Taylor Swift. If we are willing to go across the pond, one of the hottest European pop acts of the 2000′s, Tokio Hotel, is made up of very young members. Its lead singer, Bill Kaulitz, was in his mid-teens when the band broke into the European charts. Now just barely into his twenties, he and his band have been making major inroads into the market of the United States and elsewhere.
What with all these spring chickens crowding the marketplace, it almost looks as if there is very little room for older people in entertainment. Even great stars must bow to aging, to which women are especially vulnerable.
Of course, one of the most dramatic ways to address aging is to go to a cosmetic surgeon. Unfortunately, the results are not always as one would like, or the public does not like them. For instance, popular film critic Stephanie Zacharek has complained multiple times about what she sees as the sudden and recent immobility of Nicole Kidman’s facial muscles. Zacharek attributes this distressing development to the overzealous use of Botox.
Older people wanting to break into entertainment, or wanting to maintain their established place in show business may be leery of cosmetic surgery. Some of them may find that it is against their values, while others fear botched or awkward results. What, then, can people in entertainment do to maintain a youthful appearance?
Well, plenty. The tabloids document many “secrets” stars use to stay fit and young-looking. However, these means (high-end training, special diets, etc.) can be expensive—often prohibitively so for entertainers who are not fabulously rich. In that case, cheaper methods might be employed to prevent aging from proceeding too quickly.
Plenty of products on the market purport to do this, and many of them are quite affordable. The real question becomes whether or not they are effective. One of the most promising products on offer is the human growth hormone supplement pill. Now, many people are misled by the product’s name into assuming that the pills contain the actual hormone. This may not be the case. Rather, the pills contain ingredients that “encourage” the user’s body to produce more human growth hormone: a powerful chemical whose production tends to fall later in life. Its decline is associated with loss of muscle mass, bone strength, skin tone, hair, and other signs of youth. For the entertainer who wants to maintain his or her youthfulness without spending like a Hollywood millionaire, it might be worthwhile to look into this product.

EXCLUSIVE: BILL, TOM & ANDREAS IN L.A

Ok. The backgrounds have been checked and the area is non identifiable from people that are a little too into finding their every whereabouts.  The Rock star brothers have stepped in front of my camera lens once again. Very Very far away and respectable enough to let them not even notice me in their day. I hope you all just enjoy this set of photos rather than creating rumors about them. Enjoy their music, fashion, and looks. Buy their music and go to their concerts and enjoy them rather than spreading hate…….
These pics are small so people are less likely to “Borrow” them. The entire set has been sent to any photo editors who might like to grace their magazines with the boys.
If everyone is respectful of the boys and the other fans…….I will post more for you all

KAWANKU Magazine (Indonesia) - 13.07.2011

BILL KAULITZ ‘TOKIO HOTEL’ ALWAYS LOVES GERMANY

Living in a city with a population of 700 people, from childhood Bill and Tom had often got a strange sight from their friends at his age. "My childhood is full of struggle. I knew it since I got off from the School Bus, some people were laughing at me, and the others were making joke of me. Tom and I felt like we are aliens from a different planet. Sometimes our stepfather had to pick up us from the bus stop with a dog and a baseball stick so they couldn’t beat us, "recalls Bill.

Although often-bullied by their friends, Bill's never give up. Instead, he deliberately looked as eccentric as possible so people would look at him whenever he passed. "I was really enjoyed when I entered the class, and half the students turned around, looking at me. It sounds mental, huh? But that's it. Then I realized that not everybody likes me."

Beginning his career at the early age also adds some pressure on Bill. For Bill and Tokio Hotel, the German media were too harsh on them. If it were so, they chose to appear outside of Germany. "Ever since I was 15 years old, there was always something to be written about us, and mainly in Gossip column. Unlike on outside Germany, they think of us as musicians. Not just as a ‘gossip source’ " he said.

Bill also thought that Germans like being prejudice to Tokio Hotel. Once, there was a television survey. People passing by on the streets got to hear of Tokio Hotel music without being told the band’s name. Many of them like it. "As soon as my band's name is mentioned, their expressions instantly were like, hate it. That explains everything, right?" said Bill.

But this fashionable man has not even slightest intention of moving from Germany. "Germany is a home for our friends and family. And it is also (a home) for me, Tom and my dog. As soon as I open the gate, I could rest. I'll never turn away from Germany." Owww, that's so sweet!
